For many watch enthusiasts, the applause echoing across Lake Geneva once felt impossibly far away.
As the highest honor in contemporary watchmaking, the GPHG — the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève — represents far more than craftsmanship. Its iconic “Golden Hand” trophy is widely seen as a ticket into watchmaking’s inner temple. For decades, that stage belonged to the snowy valleys of Switzerland and the precision traditions of German horology. Rarely did an Eastern voice appear in the conversation.
Until now.
Long before Chinese watchmakers finally lifted the trophy, Chinese brands and independent creators had already spent years navigating the demanding path of the GPHG stage. From early nominations, to entering more award categories, to eventually standing under the spotlight, China’s rise in watchmaking did not happen overnight.
